Crew Highlights:

In phonics, we were working on the letter L. We sorted words in the -ip and -op family and unscrambled cut apart sentences. New sight words this week included said and two. These are tricky ones, along with are and have from last time. Please continue to practice at home. For reference, here is a list of what students should have mastered, as well as a look at what is coming up next. Our next phonics assessment will be next week.

In reading, we have continued learning about Holidays and Celebrations. Our mentor text this week was learning about how people celebrate the New Year all over the world. Have your child share with you a fact that we learned about New Years in New York City, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and China. We focused on finding the central idea of a text and the important details both with the mentor text and in our small reading groups. Speaking of reading groups, our readers are blossoming! I encourage you to ask your child to read a book from their book bags when you come in for Community Reading.

In writing, we have continued working on personal narratives. This week, we added feeling, the setting, and action to our stories. Students practiced adding details to help their reader know more about their story, both in words and pictures. Today, students added dialogue and speech bubbles to their pictures. It is fun to see their writing come to life!

In expedition, we are wrapping up our final two simple machines: the gear and the wedge. Students learned about how gears are used in a car opener, as well as in bikes, clocks, and machines. They did some exploratory learning with gears in doing the LEGO challenge of the hockey player, in which you twist a wheel that spins gears and moves his arm. Also, they used plastic gears which built understanding about how one gear can be used to turn other connecting gears. The last simple machine to learn about was the wedge. We started out with a door stopper, but then identified an axe, a knife, a chisel, and a forklift as other examples. Your child may come home singing The Simple Machines Song by Scratch Garden. :)

In math, we started the unit Count, Read, and Write Numbers 11 to 20. This unit explores numbers above ten and making connections to single digit and teen numbers (ex. 3 and 13). This is a great time to practice counting at home. Find piles of household objects that your child can count at home. For more information, check out the family letter that went home in Take Home Folders.

With Ms. Halle in Crew Skills, we talked about having a growth mindset. Students identified something that they can do easily and something they cannot do YET. We will continue to talk about flexible thinking and make connections to having a growth mindset as we persevere through something new or challenges. Check out their examples in Take Home Folders.

Exploratory learning with inclined planes!

LEGO challenges to build a complex figure with gears.

We continue to have drum circles every Wednesday. I am so proud of the bravery of our volunteers who are leading the drum circle or being our beat keeper with the cowbell!

Inspired by the Crayon Initiative that Ms. Bethany's Crew is doing, our Crew decided to do a Marker Recycle Drive. We will be promoting our service project across the school. We will be collecting old markers, pens, and pencils to be recycled to the company TerraCycle. Please feel free to send in old supplies from home to be recycled. We will weigh this at the end of the year to see how many pounds of markers we are saving from the landfill!

Making posters to share and hang around the school.

We read Rechenka’s Eggs and looked at examples of traditional Russian egg decorations. Then with 4th grade buddies, students used crayons and watercolors to decorate eggs. They turned out beautiful!

Happy Birthday Sam!

Happy Spring!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend, and I will see you tomorrow at the REMS auction! :)

In phonics, we were working on the letter W. New sight words this week included are and have. For reference, here is a list of what students should have mastered, as well as a look at what is coming up next. Also, I sent home flashcards for the sight words we have been working on. I encourage you to keep phonics practice fun and light, in order to prevent any frustration or resentment. Extra repetition (especially over a two week break) is encouraged. Here is the flashcard digital file if needed. Please note we have not worked on said or two yet.

In reading, we have begun learning about Holidays and Celebrations. Our first mentor text was Celebrating Earth Day. Students LOVED learning about this, and we are looking forward to celebrating in April. Have your child tell you a fact learned about Earth Day. We discussed reading strategies about using captions, comparing key words with opposites, and monitoring reading (noticing if you are not understanding) to help with reading comprehension.

We have done a variety of writing this week! In the beginning of the week, we were working on personal narratives. Students created an idea page of stories they would like to write about. Then on Wednesday, our crew did some of their BEST writing to their 4th grade buddies to congratulate them on their performance of the Colorado History Musical. At the end of the week, we did some fun "I am lucky because..." for our shamrock craft. These went home in Take Home Folders, so check them out!

In expedition, we learned about two new simple machines. For the first one, Mr. Ken did a demonstration of how he uses a PULLEY to raise and lower the flag. Students were able to make connections to how we use pulleys in the gym for belaying when we climb. Also, we learned about a SCREW. Through books and videos, we learned that a jar, nut & bolt, and a car jack are examples of a screw.

In math, we have been working on number pairs to 10. We used counters and picture models to fill in the blank of a number pair to 10. Example: 6 plus what equals ten. Also, we have been working on using the word equation. Students are learning that both sides are equal to the same amount. We can write an equation as 10=7+3 or 7+3=10.

In Crew Skills, Ms. Halle read the book Hands Are Not for Hitting. Students traced their hands and then completed the prompt:
"My hands are for ......."
Examples included helping, hugging, playing, riding my bike, and so on.
These went home in Take Home Folders.

A highlight of our week was watching the 4th graders perform the Colorado History Musical. Then, our Crew did some of their best writing yet in their notes of congratulations.

Wondering about the red & white bracelets?
They came from Ms. Erin, who shared a Greek tradition with our Crew during library.

Mr. Ken did a demonstration of how a pulley is used to raise or lower a load (or in this case, the flag).

With 4th grade buddies, we made butterflies. This connects to our expedition because you can push or pull the tabs to flap the wings.

Ms. Liesl gave a lot of praise this week for our Crew being first time listeners. Hooray!
Today they got to use boomwhackers to play a song.

The "I am Lucky Because" shamrocks turned out beautiful! Lift the clover leaves to reveal four things your child is feeling lucky about.
"I feel lucky because I can ...."
"I feel lucky because I am ..."
"I feel lucky because I have .."

Happy Birthday Everett!

Wishing you a FANTASTIC Spring Break!

With love,
~Ms. Lauren

Crew Highlights:

In phonics, we were working on the letter D. It was a review week for sight words. Students are doing a fantastic job with learning word families -an and -at, and can easily sort words on their whiteboards. We did a phonics assessment this week. Please take a look at it. There are some tricky sight words that need extra practicing at home. For reference, here is a list of what students should have mastered, as well as a look at what is coming up next. Also, phonics booklets went home today. Hold on to these for the fun games to play over Spring Break and reinforce phonics learning at home.

Writing this week was focusing on preparation for our hike. Students wrote a daypack list, a hike agreement to focus on, and a goal in their growth zones. After the hike, they wrote a reflection about how they were feeling and why. These went home in Take Home folders. Be sure to check them out!

In reading, we used the mentor text "Ly's Goldfish" to discuss how understanding the feelings of the character helps us understand the story. Students identified how Ly felt excited when she got her goldfish, then she felt sad when she forgot to feed it, and then she felt determined be more responsible in taking care of her pet. We used text and picture clues deepen comprehension. This is a great talking point for when you read with your child in the evenings.

This unit in math was about making number partners for 10. We used red & yellow counters to play "counters in a cup," where students would shake and spill out all the 10 double sided counters. They would count the yellow and red sides to find a number pair to 10. (This can be replicated at home with pennies and counting heads/tails). However, the favorite activity this week was using beads to make ten. With one number pair, they put their beads on a pipe cleaner to take home as a bracelet. Be sure to have them tell you their number pair (ex. 5 yellow and 5 red make 10).

In expedition, we have been learning about the wheel & axle. We learned through books and exploratory learning that it is easier to push or pull a load that is on wheels. We also used this opportunity to learn more about gravity and friction. Our Lego Challenge of the week was making race cars!

Students are continuing to expand their creativity in building inclined planes.

On Thursday, we went to the skatepark for students to test items from home. Students brought one item that they were sure would roll and one item to test out. Our Crew worked like scientists to make predictions, ask questions, and experiment with their items on multiple slopes. At the end, we debriefed and shared observations. Some examples of student learning included:
-items can slide down even it if doesn't roll
-gravity pulls things down from a high place to a low place
-items travel at different speeds depending on the slope
-some heavier items rolled faster than light ones and some lighter items rolled faster than heavier
-some predictions were correct and some were false
-sometimes the smooth items rolled better because of less friction
-the items that had wheels were not always faster
This led to more questions and thinking. Bravo Crew! What a great learning experience!

On the way to the skatepark, students were noticing the inclined planes of the curbs, roofs, sloping hillsides, windshields of cars, and even mountains. Then... they saw the inclined planes of the skatepark!

Students made predictions about their items, and we set expectations for our fun learning time.

And... they were off!

Here is a quick timelapse to show our fast-rolling learning in action!

At one point, they all dropped their "test" items at the same time.

Students did a fantastic job drawing, writing, and sharing their observations.

Climbing week!
A huge shoutout to our volunteer belayers!

Hearing the pride, joy, and excitement of overcoming fears and reaching goals in climbing is simply the best! I'm so proud of our climbers!
Check Seesaw for individual pictures.

Winter hike day!
Well, with 60 degrees and full sun, it felt like spring!

Checking out our hiking route along Plum Creek Trail.

Our first wildlife sighting... a caterpillar!

And we're off!

It was such a lovely day to be outside!

One of the wildlife highlights was spotting a woodpecker. Then as we were watching, we noticed that there was another bird in the hole. Kids predicted that one woodpecker was giving food to the other or the babies inside. Then at the end, the second woodpecker emerged, and they both flew off. It was quite a show!

Checking out Plum Creek.

Lots of evidence of beavers!

Snack time.

Our hikers did amazing!

We are CREW!

And we are silly! :D

I spy... a herd of deer.
Several on the left and one on the right.

Almost there!

Big high fives as they came to Festival Park!
Woohoo! They did it!
3 miles in about 2 hours!

Lunch- YUM!

And still plenty of energy to run and play. HAHA!

Back to school for an afternoon that included writing reflections, leap day activities with buddies, and climbing. What a great day!

Given the prompt:
"I feel ______ because __________."

"I feel proud that I persevered."

"I feel happy because I walked a long ways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"I feel happy because I hiked a long way even when my feet were hurting."

"I feel proud because that we saw so much wildlife."

"I feel proud  because our crew did it! Yay!"

My favorite part of the day was hearing the highlights of the hike from students and chaperones. Students were beaming with pride that they "did it!" They shared about feeling proud of carrying their own backpack, persevering when it was hard, and hiking for 3 miles. They were excited to see all the wildlife, which included deer, woodpeckers, sparrows, crows, a grasshopper, and a caterpillar. We saw evidence of beavers and mystery tracks of either dogs or coyotes.
Chaperones shared that their highlight was seeing the Crew so motivated to pick up trash along the way and leave the trail better than we found it. They were proud of our crew for hiking and staying positive. It was a beautiful day to be outside together and spend time with our Crew.
Personally, I AM SO PROUD of our CREW! It was inspiring the feel the excitement and buzz of positivity from the moment we started all the way to our finish line. We rotated groups taking turns walking in front, so I enjoyed hearing the conversations and checking in with everyone as we went. Our Crew did an excellent job being nature detectives and staying positive when they began to get tired. It feels good to accomplish something challenging together, and today we really got to experience that wonderful feeling that... WE ARE CREW!

A HUGE shoutout to our chaperones today!
Thank you for being upbeat, flexible, and supportive!

I hope everyone has a restful weekend.
My heart is full. I am SO PROUD.
Bravo to all!
~Ms. Lauren
